CALIFORNIA – Edwin Seipp was 8 years old when he took his first flight in an airplane in 1926 and knew he wanted to fly someday.

After he graduated from Princeton University in 1940, the winds of war were beginning to blow, and shortly after Civil Air Patrol was founded Dec. 1, 1941, Seipp joined in Chicago.

One of his primary jobs was target towing, helping train fighter pilots heading to North Africa, Europe and the South Pacific. Like many early CAP members, he flew his own plane.

More than 70 years later, at age 94, Seipp has been recognized by the California Wing for his World War II service. While surrounded by his wife of 60 years, his children and grandchildren, Seipp – wearing his original CAP flight cap – received lifetime membership, an Exceptional Service Award and a promotion to the grade of lieutenant colonel from Col. Jon Stokes, California Wing commander.

"I am very proud of my CAP service and am proud to receive this recognition," Seipp said.

Seipp is the second World War II-era member to be recognized in the California Wing this year.

"It is important that we recognize these CAP pioneers for their service, and hopefully we can soon continue that recognition with the presentation of the Congressional Gold Medal," Stokes said. "The California Wing is committed to getting more co-sponsors for HR 719 so the men and women who served in CAP during World War II, like Col Seipp, can be recognized.”
