NV Wing Honors WWII Member For Coastal Patrol Base Service

While Saturday, Dec. 14, marked a day of honoring the service and sacrifice of the nation’s fallen through Wreaths Across America observations across the U.S. and overseas, members of the Nevada Wing paid tribute to an original Civil Air Patrol member who’s still with us.

Wing officials honored Virgil McCarron of Sun City Summerlin with an Exceptional Service Award and the CAP rank of lieutenant colonel.

McCarron served an aircraft mechanic and sometimes as a mission observer with Coastal Patrol Base 12 in Brownsville, Texas, later moved to San Benito, Texas. He fulfilled those duties from the base’s opening until the close of the coastal patrol mission.

He then joined the U.S. Army Air Forces and was assigned as a B-26 mechanic. After the war he was a founding member of West Coast Airlines, eventually retiring in Las Vegas after a long and distinguished career in aviation.

Presenting McCarron with the Exceptional Service Award was Col. Tim Hahn, Nevada Wing commander. Also in attendance were McCarron’s caregiver, Dixie Hubbard, and:

 - Col. Herman Bishop Nellis Senior Squadron standards and evaluation officer and retired Kentucky Wing commander.
- Lt Cols. Harvey Irby, wing assistance director of operations, and Doris North, wing personnel officer.
- Majs. Thomas Cooper,Henderson Composite Squadron commande, and Carol Lynn, wing chief of staff.
- Capt. Bill Edwards, Nellis Senior Squadron commander.
